Summary

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla。 Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade， he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain。 He rarely misses his life in the jungle。 In fact， he hardly ever thinks about it at all。

Instead， Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella， an elderly elephant， and Bob， a stray dog。 But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line。

Then he meets Ruby， a baby elephant taken from her family， and she makes Ivan see their home - and his own art - through new eyes。 When Ruby arrives， change comes with her， and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better。

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship， art， and hope。

This book was in my TBR list for a long time。 I am so happy that I finally picked it up to read。 It a beautiful story about friendship， keeping a promise and what home really means。 A book that is sure to have you drop some tears or at least have that welt in your throat！ A definite read for all ages！

One of the best qualities of a book is being able to incorporate many elements and emotions properly， and I can proudly say that the One and Only Ivan is one of those books。 The One and Only Ivan is a book that revolves around a Gorilla living in a “carnival-like” area in a shopping mall。 The book focuses on his life in that mall， mixing with both humans and animals。 As the book goes on， we learn more about Ivan and his past。 The book lets us know what humans have done to Ivan， giving us a story One of the best qualities of a book is being able to incorporate many elements and emotions properly， and I can proudly say that the One and Only Ivan is one of those books。 The One and Only Ivan is a book that revolves around a Gorilla living in a “carnival-like” area in a shopping mall。 The book focuses on his life in that mall， mixing with both humans and animals。 As the book goes on， we learn more about Ivan and his past。 The book lets us know what humans have done to Ivan， giving us a story on how a silverback gorilla in the jungle became an art prodigy in a shopping mall。 While we move through Ivan’s story， we see more on the friendships and relationships Ivan established with animals and humans。 The book creates a connection between the characters and reader， while exploring themes in death， depth， development， and more。 I wholeheartedly recommend this book for the way it manages to bring up emotions， characters， and story。 The One and Only Ivan has beautifully incorporated many emotions， such as frustration， loss， grief， confusion， joy， and many more。 The darker topics and deeper emotions get conveyed to the reader in a way that lets you feel like you can really understand the characters。 It makes the book feel personal and realistic。 Throughout the book the author describes the human and animal emotions and shows how they express them in many ways。 With the shopkeeper's random outburst of anger to Ivans lack of understanding towards humans， it's all brought up in such a perfect way。 The writer allows you to be transported into their brain， knowing their thoughts， emotions， and ideas。 With this， the struggle feels all the more personal。 The author's writing style creates a connection between the reader and the character。 The purpose of the animals are greatly personified through their emotions。 It’s a brilliant way of showing the emotions while correlating with the theme of humans and animals。Next， The One and Only Ivan also shows a great human versus animal affect and shows the effect that humans have on animals。 This gives the reader an understanding of animals in the real world and the animals in The One and Only Ivan。 By including this， it brings depth to the characters and shows the person vs person conflict which fleshes out the characters。 The author shows the flaws and strengths of the characters with these interactions。 This is a preferable characteristic in books because character development is one of the things that let the characters feel more real and amicable。 The One and Only Ivan knew how to do this well， while bringing real issues into the scene。 Lastly， The One and Only Ivan is based on a true story， which grounds the harsh reality while you read it。 Knowing its a true story lets readers want to help animals that experienced the same things that Ivan did。 This also shows support towards animal causes。 Throughout the book， Katherine Applegate tells you what's happening to the animals。 For example， when Ivan was stripped away from his home in the Jungle for the entertainment of humans。 Giving a detailed explanation of this motivates readers to want to support animals in danger。 Also， being based on a true story， it makes it feel much more personal。 This book brings awareness while telling you the story of a real gorilla named Ivan。 The One and Only Ivan is that book that is filled with emotions， reality， death， loss， development， and more。 It allows the reader to fully understand and empathize with the characters。 The depth given with the characters lets them become more complex and well written。 All in all， The One and Only Ivan is for anyone who enjoys animals and well written characters and an uplifting storyline that likes to fall and rise。 。。。more

This was certainly not the light and fluffy children’s book that I was expecting。 I read this with my 10 year old and we both really enjoyed it， but parts of it are heartbreaking and may be hard for very sensitive kids。 That being said， there is a lovable cast of characters and a definite sense of hope in the future。 We’re both looking forward to reading Bob’s story in the next book。

I loved this book！ Didn’t know a lot about it going in but it had a mix of everything: good characters， funny dialogue， touching moments and so much more。 Definitely had some deep， sad moments， so I think this book is better for an older elementary audience。 But highly recommend！
